Electric Vehicles & Pollution: Facts and Claims

Electric Vehicles & Pollution

Many pieces of writing claim that electric cars produce more air pollution and are wrong!

Toxic emissions from the tailpipes of diesel and petrol cars have been the cause of thousands of premature deaths each year. The health impact of electric vehicles has raised some debate recently, particularly its non-tailpipe emissions (brake, tyre, and suspension).

1. EV and EV Charging Station Eliminate Pollution

On Brake Pollution, internal combustion engine cars use disc brakes to slow down the car resulting in the emission of particle pollution. Contrary to this, an EV charger in India uses “regenerative braking” restoring brake energy to the car’s battery to power up the car. This method eliminates the urge to use the brakes and hence diminishes particle emissions.

On Tyre Pollution, EVs are heavier in comparison to ICE cars and this additional weight increases wear and particle pollution. Yet, electronic vehicles are fitted with specially designed tyres to deal with the heavy weight of batteries to make certain that they do not debilitate too often. Instead, most on-road vehicles including heavy SUVs are to be blamed for access tyre pollution.

2. EVs Eliminate Particle Pollution

Primary particle mass (PM) emissions, i.e., those particles emitted through the exhaust, tyres, and brakes should be considered for secondary particle pollution. These particles develop in the air due to pollutants like nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and ammonia emitted through the tailpipe. These secondary particles also have a fair share in increasing PM 2.5 and PM 10. Hence, deteriorating the air quality.

As per recent research, these secondary particles contribute nearly 29 percent of the total PM car emissions. However, EV cars comparatively contribute less PM 2.5 and PM 10 against diesel and petrol cars.

3. EVs Reduce Toxic Emissions from Engines

Switching to an EV from an ICE car reduces all toxic tailpipe pollution such as NOs, HC, and carbon monoxide. Pollutant NO2 is alone responsible for about 50,000 premature deaths a year in Europe. It’s the reason behind respiratory and cardiovascular disease and can result in a death sentence for people suffering from asthma.

ICE cars are responsible for the emission of other toxic and cancer-causing chemicals like benzene and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The only possible solution to eliminate these harmful emissions is to switch to EVs. The sooner, the better. EV charger manufacturers in India verify the fact.

4. Emissions from Tyres and Brakes Must be Controlled

Estimated enhancement to air quality by switching to EVs does not necessarily imply overlooking non-exhaustive pollution. Particle pollution emitting from the brakes and tyres must be eliminated irrespective of the vehicles in use.

In Conclusion

EVs emit less pollution in the air than fossil-fuelled cars. Additionally; they reduce emissions from engine exhaust thereby reducing emissions from the brakes. But, claims that EVs cause extreme particle pollution due to tyres are deceptive as they overlook the comprehensive air quality benefits. Particle emission shouldn’t be an excuse to decline the transition to zero-emission mobility. Rather, measures should acknowledge pollution from brakes and tyres to make certain that emissions from these particular sources are narrowed down for all on-road vehicles.
